Middle School English as a Second Language

Goals:
Students will demonstrate progress in speaking, listening, reading, writing and study skills in English with the goal of becoming academically and socially successful in middle school at ISE.
Course Overview:
All Middle school ESL students have one block of ESL. Students in ESL will also receive ESL Support during core subject and ESL class time.
ESL Language:
- Students learn to use grammar properly.
- Students develop their speaking and writing skills.
- Students improve their listening and reading comprehension.
- Resources include integrated skills textbooks, grammar texts, ESL materials, and other reading materials (literature, news articles, etc).
ESL Support:
- Students receive support for their core subject classes (English, math, science, social studies).
- Students learn the language and vocabulary for each subject.
- Students learn effective research and study skills.
- Students receive extra assistance with assignments.
Grades are determined by:
Tests and quizzes
Classwork and participation
Homework and projects
Vocabulary Notebooks
Reading Journals
ESL Testing:
Students will be tested for progress in English language proficiency in November, 2010, and May, 2011.
Expectations of the Students:
Speak only English at all times.
Come to class prepared.
Use class time effectively.
Cooperate with other students.
Show respect for the staff, other students and the ESL center.
Participate in class discussions and activities.
Complete all assignments carefully and on time.
Be actively involved in your own English language learning.
