Goals: Students will improve their proficiency in the four skills of speaking, listening, reading and writing English:
- to achieve grade-level proficiency in English.
- to build self-confidence and enhance success in core classes.
Course Description and Resources
AED classes and coursework will be designed to meet individual students’ language needs in the following areas:
1. Students will improve their speaking and listening skills by practicing active oral communication, focusing on:
- pronunciation / intonation
- fluency, clarity and accuracy in speaking
- self-confidence in oral participation and presentation
- listening comprehension and note-taking skills
- expanded vocabulary use and recognition
2. Students will improve their reading skills by reading a wide variety of sources (novels, texts, internet sources, newspapers, magazines, journals, etc.), focusing on:
- reading comprehension, analysis and interpretation
- vocabulary building
- reading for pleasure
- understanding the nuances of grammatical structures
3. Students will improve the quality of their writing proficiency using the writing process and the research process to compose a variety of writing assignments (essays, journals, letters, reports, creative writing, etc.), focusing on:
- clear and concise academic writing
- instruction in language usage and mechanics which focuses on the problems evident in the student’s writing
- expanded vocabulary use

Grades: Report card grades are based on evaluation of class work, homework, quizzes, tests, and achievement of personal learning goals.
